Cork doesn't grow on wine bottles, it grows on trees! Lightweight and beautiful, cork is actually the outer bark of the cork oak tree, which grows mostly in the Mediterranean region.

Unlike other wood-driven materials, the coolest thing about cork is how sustainable it is due to the fact that cork trees can actually regrow cork bark!

Here's how cork is farmed and harvested:

• The outer layer of cork bark from living cork oak trees without causing the tree permanent damage.
• Over time, the tree will grow a new layer of bark.
• Sustainable and responsible cork farmers usually go about 8-10 years between harvests from the same tree.

Fun fact: The top cork producing country is Portugal!

Humans have been using the bark of cork trees as a material for thousands of years, and there are good reasons for it! Even today, it's still used consistently both everything from food production (think wine corks!) to home goods to instrument production! Here are some of the benefits:

Routine Cleaning

• Clean Gently: To avoid damaging the natural surface and pattern of the cork, be gentle. Use a damp, non-abrasive cloth or sponge and a small amount of mild soap to clean the surface in small, gentle circular motions.
• Air Dry: After cleaning, remove any excess soap or moisture with a clean damp cloth and then the cork air dry at room temperature.
• Aftercare: Make sure that the item has dried completely before you use it again.

Removing Stains

• For fresh spills, use a clean damp cloth or sponge to blot away the stain.
• For old or tough stains: Use a gentle cloth or sponge and a small amount of rubbing alcohol to wipe away the stain. Make sure to blot/wipe only at the are of the stain so that you don't just move the stain around.

Always avoid harsh chemicals and textures when caring for cork, and do not fully submerge it in water.
